The use of video confrontation in patients with OCD
background Obsessive compulsive disorder (ocd) is an illness which is difficult to treat. Some patients are cured but treatment mostly causes only partial- or no remission. To ease the effect of treatment the Marina de Wolfcentrum in Ermelo (a clinic specialised to treatpatients with ocd) sought new ways to treat these patients. One of the new methods they are using is video confrontation. Patients make a home video of their compulsions together with a nurse educated to work with psychiatric patients. During their therapy they watch the video of their own compulsions. While looking at these video’s a part of the patients seemed to be shocked by the extension of their compulsions and seemed to be more motivated to accept their treatment.
aim To evaluate the use of video confrontation in patients with ocd through interviewing 20 patients after they received this intervention. We want to know if video confrontation really enhanced motivation to treatment, how patients experienced the treatment and if the treatment has special side effects.
method We analysed the interviews according to the grounded theory described by Glaser.
results Preliminary results will be shown and we will watch a video of a patient who received this procedure and talks about his experiences.
conclusion Video confrontation seems to be helpful in patients with ocd but was never investigated profoundly. This symposium will show preliminary results of a study according to grounded theory which will give a deeper look at this treatment method.
