The Asperger-syndrome in the DSM-IV
J.H. Jessurum, C. Verhagen-Redtenbacher
In this article the DSM-IV criteria for the Asperger-syndrome and autism are exam ined, concluding that as a consequence of the excluding criterium that Asperger cannot be classified if autism can be classified, it is virtually impossible to come to the first classification. The question is raised why the criterium of clumsiness has not been included in the DSM-IV, as opposed to the other classification systems. As things stand now, the authors conclude it is of the utmost importance for clinicians to diagnose patients, and not only classify them, in order to force ourselves to think about treatment possibilities, goals en methods.
