Psychoanalytic psychotherapy of diabetespatients; borderland between psychiatry and internal medicine
R.E. Breuk, W. van Tilburg
Specialists of internal medicine should take into account that poor metabolic control is often related to behavioural problems of diabetes patients. Specialists of internal medicine should consider sending the frequently poorly controlled group of patients to a psychiatrist. Psychiatrists, treating patients with diabetes, should keep notice of the hidden meaning of the disease and metabolic control, even if the reason for psychotherapy is not metabolic control. Psychotherapeutic treatment of patients with hidden poorly metabolic control should contain psychoanalytic as well as behav- ioural therapeutic elements. Finally the psychotherapeutic treatment of patients with diabetes is an example of so-called `psychiatric psychotherapy'.
