New research
Polymerase chain reaction and psychiatry
A.H. Veefkind, C.A. Moggré
An important breakthrough in molecular biology is the recently discovered technique of the `polymerase chain reaction' (PCR). By means of this technique strands of DNA can be copied in a relatively short time, producing a substantial amount of detectable material. This generates new possibilities for medical laboratory diagnoses. In this article the technical background, the impact on application in psychiatry, and our own line of research, are outlined.
