Social psychiatry from a transcultural point of view
J.T.V.M. de Jong
The WHO Collaborative Study on Strategies for Extending Mental Health into Primary Health Care
inspired the development of a social-psychiatric programme in Guinea-Bissau. Epidemiological data on this programme are compared with results from other (non-)western cultures. By including healers in the comparison it is questionable whether a mentally ill person is better treated in the west than elsewhere.
