In the last decade the number of publications about multiple personality in the psychiatric literature has dramatically increased. This seems to be connected with the revival of interest in hypnosis. Most authors state that multiple personality is not the rare clinical condition it was considered to be. After a brief discussion of the clinical picture according to the recent literature, theoretical explanations of the phenomenon are summarized. Serious doubts exist about the authenticity of the disorder. The author concludes that the importance of suggestion in the development of multiple personality requires further investigation.
