Rational Rehabilitation in the treatment of patient with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A pilot study

background In a randomised controlled study, a type of cognitive behavior therapy known as Rational Rehabilitation proved effective in the treatment of patients with chronic mental symptoms. Post-traumatic stress disorder is a serious illness that occurs frequently and can last for many years. Rational Rehabilitation may also be an effective treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.
aim To investigate, via a pilot study, on the effect of Rational Rehabilitation in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder, whether a randomised controlled study is called for.
method Nineteen patients with post-traumatic stress disorder, who were awaiting regular treatment, opted to join the study. The effect of Rational Rehabilitation was studied in relation to: symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, degree of happiness experienced, autonomy, social support and need for further treatment.
results Rational Rehabilitation seems to have a positive effect on all outcome measures, except flashbacks.
conclusion A controlled study of the effect of Rational Rehabilitation in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder seems justified.
