We describe seven patients who developed hyperthyroidism while being treated with lithium. A literature search showed that this was more than a coincidence and that a patient taking lithium has an increased risk of developing Morbus Graves. The literature search also revealed that the use of lithium increases the risk of developing silent thyroiditis, a condition that can cause hypothyroidism.
