A 25-year-old Hindustani patient, diagnosed as suffering from schizophrenia, was referred for a second opinion, because there were doubts about the diagnosis and treatment. Following a consultation with a cross-cultural psychiatrist and the application of the 'cultural formulation of diagnosis', the diagnosis of schizophrenia was rejected and an alternative therapy was proposed that was in line with the cultural background of the patient.
