From dualism to integration: a plea for neuropsychiatric approach to psychopathology
A.F.G Leentjens
Over the past few decades the biological approach and the psychological approach in psychiatry have evolved more or less independently. Research, however, is providing more and more evidence that the concept of a dualistic separation between body and mind is no longer tenable. In this essay the consequences of this evidence for clinical practice are discussed. It is argued that there should be an integrated neuropsychiatric approach to psychopathology which not only takes biological, psychological and social factors into account but also considers how these factors interact and relate to cerebral processes.
