Short report
Are cats good companions for patients with schizophrenia?
Y. de Kok
summary The cat seems to be the ideal companion for the patient with schizophrenia. Research showed that patients with schizophrenia, when compared to healthy controls, have grown up significantly more often in a household with a cat. Evolutionary psychiatry provides a good explanation for schizophrenic patients' preference for cats. There is some evidence that pets, including cats, can be useful in the treatment of patients with schizophrenia.
