summary Little is known about how the attachment between mother and child can be adversely affected be psychiatric illness in the mother. In such situations both mother and child run the risk of developing severe psychopathology. This case study demonstrates how important it is to carry out a thorough psychiatric assessment at the earliest opportunity and to embark thereafter on the most appropriate course of therapy. The article provides some treatment principles and a theoretical background.
