Mood disorders as risk factor for ischemic heart disease
M.J.A.M. Coopmans
Recent prospective cohort studies indicate mood disorders to be an independent risk factor for the development of ischemic heart disease many years later. The main hypotheses to explain this risk are a hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical hyperactivity and a decreased heart rate variability that have been found in many depressed patients. The preventive importance of an adequate treatment of depression and cardiac screening in case of a history of depression, is stressed.
