The aetiology of depression in the elderly: The vascular depression hypothesis

Current aetiological research in late-life psychiatric disorders places again particular emphasis on the role of ischemic injury to the brain. Primarily based upon Magnetic Resonance Imaging (mri) findings several researchers have proposed the concept of vascular depression in the elderly. The background of this concept and its potential relevance for practice and research are discussed.
