The treatment of choking phobia: An approach based on the processing of traumatic memories
A. de Jongh, E. ten Broeke
Choking phobia is characterized by fear and avoidance of swallowing foods and liquids. It often develops following an episode of choking on food. This paper shortly reviews te literature on choking phobia, medical and psychiatric differential diagnosis, as well as possible treatment approaches to choking phobia. A case of a 30-year-old woman with a phobia on choking, which she acquired after a traumatic incident during her stay at a hospital 5 years before, demonstrates the possibility of reprocessing the traumatic memories of the event that caused the dysfunction. It is discussed why such an approach can be useful.
