Psychiatric psychotherapy in a transcultural context
F.A.M. Kortmann
Universal or non-specific factors play an important role in the psychotherapeutic relationship. To a certain extent the psychiatrist has to respect the norms and values of his patient, his cultural beliefs regarding the cause of the illness and the therapeutic approach that is needed according to the patient. Some negative effects on the patientcompliance are mentioned due to cultural differences between psychiatrist and patient because of differences in gender, age and socio-cultural class.
