Schizophrenia and drastic changes in hairstyle
J. à Campo, M. Merckelbach
The current study evaluated whether drastic changes in hairstyle are associated with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. In a sample of 286 hospitalized psychiatric patients, it was found that manipulation of hairstyle is more frequently seen in schizophrenic orschizophreniform patients than in other diagnostic subgroups. Furthermore, the data suggest that there is a specific connection between schizophrenia of the disorganized type and drastic changes in hairstyle. The role of these changes in the phenomeno logy of schizophrenia is discussed.
