Sexual behaviour of psychiatric inpatients
P. Sienaert, P. Nijs, W. Vandereycken
Approximately half of the patients in a psychiatric hospital appear to be sexually active, and in many cases it concerns risk behaviour (AIDS). Nevertheless, the sexuality of psychiatric patients is receiving strikingly little attention in the literature. These patients are not a-sexual but want to talk about their sexual concerns and anxieties. Clinicians and nursing staff should learn to communicate about `these things'. With regard to sexual activities within the hospital, the staff should rely on a clear policy.
