Psychiatric disorders: prevalence and relationship with physical complaints and disability in primary care

The prevalence of psychiatric morbidity in primary care is about 23 percent. In this review studies are presented from which can be concluded that psychiatric disorders are an important factor in the etiology of physical complaints and disability. Treatment for psychiatric disorders significantly reduces disability and physical complaints. Mechanisms which can explain the relationship between psychiatric disorders and disability and physical complaints are reviewed. Concluded is that psychiatric disorders are a main factor in the etiology of physical complaints and disability in primary care.
