Intensive treatment of post-traumatic stressdisorder; experiences with policemen
Police officers, in the course of their work, regularly fall victim to traumatic events, leading in some cases to the development of a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Treatment programmes are based on a number of different views about the pathogenesis of PTSD, and the results are likewise widely divergent. This paper represents an account of personal experience in the field; one group sufficed with short-term treatment in which the full impact of past traumas was recalled to memory, whilst another group required more prolonged treatment. Results show that in all cases the recalling to mind of suppressed memories by means of hypnotherapy is absolutely essential in enabling clients, in a symbolic way, to re-know the feeling that they are again in control of their own destinies.
