Health policy for the elderly needs information about the health condition of this population. For providing the necessary epidemiological data a health survey on the local level was set up. In this survey mental health counted as a crucial variable. The author describes the prevalence, nature and distribution of psychiatric problems in two different elderly populations. Cases were identified according to DSM-III-criteria by means of the Diagnostic Interview Schedule.
