Life-event research and psychopathology
R. Sanderman, J. Ormel, G. Raats
In this paper we want to underscore the importance of life-event research in the study of psychiatric disorders. It is concluded that stress plays a role of some importance in the etiology of psychological illness, though it is not a necessary prerequisite in the process of decompensation. It is therefore of particular interest to study the role of mediating variables such as personality traits, social support and coping style. More comprehensive answers to questions concerning etiology and outcome of psychological illnesses can be given when these variables are included. This leads us to advocate a shift in research emphasis towards prospective studies in which special attention is given to mediating variables.
