Short report
Inpatient treatment of severe anorexia nervosa with behaviour modification
techniques
A.J.M. Schmidt
In a number of cases anorexia nervosa has to be treated on an inpatient base. In this setting behaviour modification techniques are useful and often implicit. Described are:
- operant conditioning during weight restoration,
- exposure- or systematic desensitisation procedures of the phobic aspects of the anorectic behaviour,
- shaping- and fading procedures following weight restoration,
- cognitive therapy, directed against the anorectic, perfectionistic attitude, and
- social skills training.
In short, the complementary relation is described between the behavioural model in the treatment of anorexia nervosa and some other therapeutic models.
