A decision procedure for lumbar puncture is presented, based on a discussion of clinical tradition and the literature regarding the role of CSF-investigation in psychiatry. It is stressed that there can never be a blind following of these rules, and that the individual aspects in each case have te be taken into account. CSF investigation appears to have a limited but definite place in psychiatrie diagnosis.
