Growing pains or growing syndromes — Emotional aspects of psychiatric training
Induced by a large number of forth-coming changes in psychiatrie training in The Netherlands which would mean as much stiffening the emotional load of the resident, a literature review of American publications has been ondertaken in order to learn from changements in similar educational situations elsewhere. Clearly stands out how important it is to have gone through the stress of this specific training situation in order to become a good psychiatrist. Even more important it is to 'work through' these burdens, to realize that they are 'all in the game' and that symptoms arising from these processes are of 'self limiting' character. Equally is figured out that the carrying-ranges of the residents are flexible and that there are many possibilities to enlarge them. Discussed is which of these possibilities should be considered most. A slight preference is gathered from the reviewed literature for peer group related activities.
