Psychoanalysis and psychoanalytically-based psychotherapy
Psychoanalytically-based-psychotherapy (P.B.P.) includes a group of psychotherapies which originate from classical psychoanalysis. Both are founded on the basic psychoanalytical principles. The author makes an attempt at clarifying the differences between psychoanalysis and P.B.P., and differences within the group of P.B.P. Starting from a definition of psychoanalysis, method, technique and aims of both kind of therapies are compared.
Most important differences are seen in the intensity of transference and transference-neurosis, and the way of handling transference by the technique of interpretation. P.B.P. can range from an 'intermediate' method approximating psychoanalysis to focal shortterm psychotherapy. The more distant from classical psychoanalysis, the more limited goals are intended. Differences in indication are discussed. Questions arise whether therapists can do P.B.P. without classical psychoanalytical training.
