Psychiatry still in discussion, a few culture-philosophical considerations round possible developments
Mental sickness and the approach of it by public assistance, continously onght to be interpretated throughout the entire culture field. The history of mental sickness is also history of a culture. The changeability of our present culture is also influencing our psychiatric thinking and doing. At this moment we seem to have an urgent need of models in which the present developments on their relevances could be tested, so that it will give us some indication to proceed. We thought that according to the ideology as been stated by Van Peursen in his book 'Strategy of the Culture' (Strategie van de Cultuur), this development would be able to help us. Also the healthcare finds itself in a state of transition between an 'ontological-substantivly' and 'functional-operationalistic' strategy. The so-called 'antipsychiatric movement' would possibly be able to help us find a way to trace the blind spots in our sphere of action. Developments in our hospital-existence indicates a policy or growing functionality into which also operationalistic tendences are not strange.
