Short report
Wat is psychiatrie?
M. J. H. M. Wertenbroek
The diagnosis: psychical deviation or psychical disturbance is 1) a simple one;
2) a relative one; 3) a social one; 4) a non-medical one.
A psychical deviation is not necessarily an illness.
The statement: 'a mental illness is a cerebral illness' has not been proved.
Being disappointed by the medical-therapeutic possibilities with psychical disturbances, para-medical therapies have been introduced.
According to Freud and Rogers psycho-therapy is only possible if the psychical
disturbance has not been caused by (is not the correlate of) a cerebral illness.
Only with healthy people psycho-therapy is possible. (Rümke)
It is a mistake to give the name of therapy to those psychical interferences with
the mental disturbances of a healthy person which aim at helping him (ev. to get
rid of them). We had better call these psychagogy, which belongs to the domain
of the non-medical psychic hygiene.
Psychagogy is para-medical aid. The phsysician as such is not more competent
than is the non-medical man.
Psychiatry is that part of medical science which has as its objective the psychically deviated, in as much as his deviation is the correlate of a materially cerebral, disfunction or is to be influenced favorably somato-therapeutically.
So far as the psychiatrist is not able to deal with the cerebral disfunction by
therapeutic means, he may try to help his patients by para-medical interference,
which he will delegate to schooled people in the para-medical fields. Sociotherapy,
occupational therapy, expressive and creative therapy, movement-therapy.
The para-medical disciplines mentioned above, which by the way should not be
called therapies, have, together with psychagogy, their specific places within the
range of aids that may be of fered to the psychical disturbances in the healthy
person. He will profit most from these psycho-hygienic methods if the representatives of them are working on equal terms in a team.
Psychiatric aid is optimally coordinated medical and paramedical aid.
A useful model for the classification of psychical disturbances is to be drawn
from cybernatics.
There are psychogenic somatic disturbances which may be cured by psychotherapy (in its strictest meaning).
The psychogenic psychical disturbances may be favorably influenced by psychagogy as well as by somato-therapy.
