A case of transient global amnesia (Fisher en Adams, 1964) is described. This is a sudden attack of 1. inability to memorize current events; 2. extensive retrograde amnesia and results in disorientation in time,' During the attack, there are no other abnormalities; remote memory and so-called 'immediate memory' are intact. Gradual recovery follows after some hours, but a permanent amnesia for the attack and a short retrograde amnesia persist. The patient is usually over 50, recurrence is rare. The differention from hysterical amnesia and the nature and possible mechanism of transient global amnesia are discussed.
