The psychiatrist and the Act on formal admissions to psychiatric hospitals (BOPZ): guardian of the society or therapist?
W.M.J. Hassing, T.V. van Lent, M. van der Velden
Using a case history as illustration, the different and occasionally non-professional roles the psychiatrist fulfils in the procedures of the Act on formal admissions to psychiatric hospitals (BOPZ) is presented. How these roles relate to the position of the psychotic patient is also discussed.
As a point of reference the legal possibility of involuntary treatment has been chosen.
The question arises whether the new Act creates indeed more treatment possibilities for the psychotic patient.
