Body image dissatisfaction and body dysmorphic disorder
explanation It has become widely recognised that body image dissatisfaction is a significant issue for both women and men. Almost half of the people are dissatisfied with their appearance and two thirds considers cosmetic procedures. Extreme cases of body image dissatisfaction can lead to the onset of debilitating body image disorders such as body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Patients with BDD are obsessed with a particular part of their appearance or their whole appearance without having a defect or only a small defect (DSM-IV). BDD is an often severe and disabling condition, affecting up to 2% of the population These patients prefer help from a dermatologist or plastic surgeon to treat this imaginary or exaggerated defect.
Different authors will discuss body image dissatisfaction in the general population, psychopathology and etiology of BDD, prevalence of BDD at the department of dermatology together with its diagnostic problems, and new treatment modalities.
