Epilepsy and aggression: A review of the literature
H. Omloo-Visser, T.C.A.M. Woerkom
The relationship epilepsy-aggression is a complicated one. The incidence of aggression in patients suffering from epilepsy, particularly from partial epilepsy with complex symptomatology, is higher than average. Most aggression is interictal; prodromal and postictal aggression are rare indeed. Interictal aggression in psychoses, personality disorders and dissociative disorders are reviewed. An intricate interplay of unfavourable biological, psychological and social factors is concerned. Special attention is payed to the role of the limbic system and the `kindling' phenomenon.
