Prevention of depression in the elderly: A systematic review
background Depression among older adults is a highly prevalent condition, which is associated with considerable suffering for the patient and his or her relatives, with high levels of service use, huge economic costs and increased rates of morbidity and mortality. Although treatment options have been studied well, the possibilities for prevention have not been explored sufficiently.
method We are currently conducting a systematic review of studies on prevention of depression in older adults. We searched bibliographical databases and selected studies aimed at examining the effects of preventive interventions aimed at older adults.
results In our presentation, we will describe the effects of preventive interventions, but also focus on the contents and types of interventions, and the target populations. The first searches indicate that we will be able to include ten to fifteen studies.
conclusion Several preventive interventions aimed at depression in older adults have been developed. Directions for future research and for practical use of preventive interventions will be presented.
