Polygraphy (the popular name is lie detection) is an activity that is hotly debated. This article puts forward arguments for and against the use of polygraphy. First of all a framework for lie detection is presented and thereafter the theoretical basis and practical aspects of the use of lie detection for risk assessment are described. Finally the future prospects for polygraphy in risk assessment are described.
