A W.H.O.-Survey of mental health service activities, conducted in 1969 and 1970 reveals the enormous difficulties of registration. No clear definitions of activities and facilities are available. Similar problems are encountered in attempts at registration of in-and out patient activities in the Netherlands. Aims and ways of collecting information are discussed.
