Developmental coordination disorder: a new diagnostic category in DSM-III-R
Developmental coordination disorder is a new diagnostic category listed on Axis II in DSM-III-R. Children, who were hospitalized for psychiatric treatment, were administered the Dutch version of the `Hamm-Marburger Körperkoordinationstest für Kinder' (HMKTK, Wiegersma and Van der Velde 1975) in order to assess motor coordination. While prevalence of Developmental coordination disorder has been estimated as high as 3 to 6% for children in the age range from 5-11 years, our results indicate that 30% of the clinical population suffers from impaired motor coordination. Performance on the HMKTK correlated significantly with the score on a test for neurological soft signs (QNST). However, there was no correlation between motorcoordination (HMKTK) and visuo-motorintegration (Beery) and writing. Furthermore there was no relation between Developmental coordination disorder and AD-HD, nor with global self worth.
