Zuchtigheid en de zuchtige mens
The addicts with their various forms of addiction are seen in the light of a general human trend of being discontent with his lot. In this connection the tragic figure of Goethe's Faust is introduced as a typical representative of his kind, with the corresponding attitude towards life. Ultimately evetything is sacraficed, even to the end of self-destruction in the aim to level up man's intrinsic deficiency and his falling short of attaining a state of deity. This internal discord about the inadequacies of man's existence is reflected in all the diverse manifestations in relation to this uneasiness. It has two exponents. The first one has always existed, throughout the ages, as the result of the imperfection of mankind and the imperfect structure of his society. The second exponent, on the contrary, is directly connected with and determinated by the period in which we actually live. Our times are basically influenced by a universal crisis about authority, with its many aspects in our post-war society.
